FAQs for Deck Stain Projects
Not usually. If the existing stain is peeling or flaking, power wash with a 2800 psi pressure washer and or scrape those areas first. If the surface is still intact, even with an older stain, you can typically apply Weather Boss directly over it. In most deck projects, a thorough cleaning is more important than full sanding.
Start by power washing the deck thoroughly to remove dirt, pollen, mildew, and loose debris. If the boards have an older stain that’s peeling or flaking, scrape or sand those areas down before applying if power washer cant remove. If the previous finish is still intact and not peeling, Weather Boss can usually be applied directly over it. Test an area to see how it looks and reacts with the old stain.
Weather Boss is a penetrating stain, not a surface coating, which means it enhances the natural grain of your deck boards without leaving behind a glossy or artificial finish. The result is a deck that still looks and feels like real wood.
For decks with grain worth showing off, Honey Brown are popular choices that highlight the wood’s natural character while adding warm, rich color. Redwood Brown (our most popular deck mix) offers a deeper, bolder tone, while Clear protects the surface without changing the color of the wood at all. Colors can also be mixed together to dial in the exact shade you’re after.
Yes. Weather Boss bonds well with pressure-treated lumber and also helps seal the wood so the chemicals used in the treatment process don’t leach onto the surface. That’s especially important for decks where pets lay and people often walk barefoot.
Most decks need two color coats and a clear sealer coat. Apply the first coat and allow it to dry (typically 5 to 30 minutes), then assess the coverage. A second coat is recommended for maximum protection and deeper color, especially on new or very porous wood.Then final clear coat offers maximum protection.
Most decks are ready for light foot traffic within 24 to 48 hours. Full cure time depends on temperature, humidity, and the number of coats applied. For the first few days, it’s best to avoid dragging heavy furniture across the surface.
Yes. Weather Boss can be applied in temperatures as low as 32°F, which means you can often start your deck project earlier in the season than with most other stains. If temperatures dip below freezing overnight after application, that’s typically fine. Just resume once temperatures rise back above 32°F.
Depends on traffic and desired look over the years. Because Weather Boss bonds within the wood fiber, it won’t peel, crack, or flake. When it’s time to refresh the deck, simply wash away dirt and pollen and apply a clear maintenance coat. No sanding, scraping, or stripping required. Apply color coats where the stain has faded. This is most commonly in front of doorways, stairs, etc.
