The Weather Boss XT Formula:

A higher-concentration formula with 50% more natural resins and oils, built for cedar shake roofs, rough-cut timbers, cracked logs, and severely aged wood that standard stains can’t fully penetrate.

For best results, avoid using XT on new decks, hardwood floors, or dense, tight-grain wood.

Highlights:

50% More Resins and Oils Built for Open-Grained Wood  Restores Aged Cedar Roofs Permanent Deep Penetration  Non-Toxic, Natural Formula

For wood that’s too far gone for a standard stain. Cedar shake roofs left baking in the sun, rough-cut timber with deep cracks, and old log cabins where the grain has opened up and dried out. Other stains sit on top and can't penetrate deep enough into the wood to bond. Weather Boss XT was made with this in mind.

XT carries 50% more natural tree resins and oils than the original Weather Boss formula. That extra concentration allows it to absorb deeper into open-grained, cracked, and aged wood where other products fail. It restores cedar shake roofs that most contractors would recommend replacing and helps bring dried-out logs back to life. The worse the wood looks, the better XT performs.

Same natural, non-toxic formula. Same soap-and-water cleanup. Same permanent bond. XT isn’t a different product philosophy. It's the original dialed up for the jobs that need it most.

Coverage on XT projects will be at the lower end of the 100 to 250 square foot per gallon range because open-grained and aged wood absorbs significantly more product. For large projects like roofs, the 5-gallon container is the practical choice. Keep extra on hand. Apply in temperatures down to 32°F. Allow 24 hours to cure before rain.

Roofs, rough cut timber, wood with deep cracks, old log cabins with open, dry grain.

Keeping the Tradition Alive

Weather Boss XT draws from the same tradition that inspired the original formula: the centuries-old Norwegian practice of preserving wooden stave churches over the last 1,300 years using natural tree sap XT carries 50% more of the resins and oils that make that kind of longevity possible. It’s the closest thing to that ancient approach in a modern can.

How to Get the Most Out of Weather Boss XT

XT is a concentrated formula with 50% more resins and oils than Original Weather Boss. The surfaces it targets absorb more product than standard wood.

The optimum application is three to four coats: two XT color (or clear) coats followed by one to two coats of Weather Boss Clear Sealer. On open-grained, cracked, and aged wood, expect the first coat to be absorbed quickly. That is normal. It means the formula is doing its job.

How to Apply Weather Boss

Prepare

Pressure wash the surface (minimum 2,800 psi). Set nails and screws. Replace damaged wood. Sand or scrape if needed to remove old stain and open the grain. Clean dust before applying.

Mix Thoroughly

Mix thoroughly before use. Oils and pigments settle at the bottom. Use a bristle brush or pour back and forth between two 5-gallon buckets. Restir if the stain sits for more than 20 minutes.

Apply Two XT Color or Clear Coats.

Spray, brush, or roll. Flood the surface, let it absorb, then back brush with the grain. Allow approximately 30 minutes between coats or until the surface is nearly dry. Applying the second coat while the first is still slightly damp is ideal for maximum penetration.

Apply One or Two More Clear Sealer Coats to Desired Finish

This is the finishing step. The Clear Sealer adds an additional layer of protective oils and resins over your color coats for optimum protection and durability. It is also what you use for future maintenance recoats.

Clean Up

Soap and water. That’s it. No solvents. No harsh chemicals. Wipe away any unwanted spills before the product dries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn about our Weather Boss XT Formula

XT contains 50% more natural resins and oils than the original formula. It’s designed specifically for open-grained, cracked, and severely aged wood that needs deeper penetration than a standard stain can provide. If your wood is in good condition or has a tight grain, the original Weather Boss is the right choice.

XT is designed for open-grained, weathered wood. Do not use Weather Boss XT for new decks, hardwood floors, or dense wood surfaces, where the formula cannot penetrate properly.

Yes, but it’s usually not necessary. XT is formulated for rough, open-grained, and severely aged surfaces. For most deck projects, Weather Boss Original provides the right level of protection. If your deck boards are old, cracked, or rough-sawn, XT may be the better fit.

Yes. XT was specifically developed for this kind of restoration. The concentrated formula absorbs into aged, open-grained cedar and forms a permanent bond that standard stains can’t achieve. Many customers have restored roofs they were told needed full replacement.

Coverage depends heavily on the porosity and condition of the wood. On severely aged or cracked surfaces, expect lower coverage per gallon than the original formula because the wood absorbs more product. Plan for the lower end of the 100 to 250 square foot range and have extra on hand.

Yes. Weather Boss XT is available in Clear, Sunlight Honey, Honey, Light Honey, Honey Brown, Natural Brown, Redwood Brown, and Redwood. Colors can be mixed. Custom tinting is also available. Contact us directly for custom pigment options.
